What We Do
- Provide outreach and community resources to DC’s 30,000 veterans and their family members that support Mayor Bowser’s pathways to the middle class.
- Assist DC veterans and their family members with their federal VA claims and benefits through MOVA’s District Veteran Service Officers.
- Develop district level veteran programs that provide DC veterans and their families a fair shot.
Meet the Director
Colonel (retired) Charlette K. Woodard, the Director of the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs (MOVA), is a native Washingtonian and served 30 years in the Department of the Army. Assuming this role of the Director of MOVA enables her to continue fulfilling her public service commitment to nearly 28,000 DC veterans and their families or survivors in obtaining educational, financial, social services, and other benefits available through Federal, local resources, and private organizations.
She served our country for 30 years in the Department of the Army as a senior Human Resources officer specializing in Human Resources Management, Strategic Planning, and Operations Management. Ms. Woodard's career encompasses various assignments within and outside the United States, including two deployments supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Colonel (ret) Woodard was the first black woman garrison commander at Devens Reserve Forces Training Area, MA (Fort Devens). Colonel (ret) Woodard graduated from the National War College. Ms. Woodard has held numerous leadership positions throughout her career and has received multiple awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal.
History
The Office of Veterans Affairs was created as an entity under the Executive Office of the Mayor in October 2001. The office was established to provide veteran benefits, assistance, information, outreach, effective advocacy, claims processing assistance and service provider coordination to veterans and their families so that they can access their entitled resources and benefits. The office also develops, coordinates and attends veteran commemorative events that recognize the military service and sacrifice of District of Columbia veterans.
