(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn announced that eight nonprofit youth-serving organizations will receive over $3.19 million from the Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes (OST Office) to support high-impact tutoring programming serving approximately 1,600 pre-K – 12th grade students. Grant funds are provided by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education through the American Rescue Plan.
“We know that far too many of our students have fallen behind due to the impacts of the pandemic, and we need to be doing everything we can to accelerate learning and meet their social, emotional, and academic needs, both in the classroom and after school,” said Mayor Bowser. “We’re excited to be supporting trusted organizations that will deliver effective, high-quality tutoring programs to our students who need it most.”
Selected organizations will provide tutoring programming before, during school, or after school for a minimum of 90 minutes per week during the 2021-2022 School Year in the subject areas of literacy and/or math. These organizations work in tandem with traditional school settings to promote fluency building, comprehension, and social-emotional learning.
Since October 2017, the OST Office has worked to improve the quality of OST programs in the District by facilitating workshops that improve the skills of youth development professionals and supporting capacity building within organizations.
The OST Office leads the Learn24 network, which consists of OST programs, government agencies, the Commission on Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes, the Institute for Youth Development, and other key stakeholders that are committed to ensuring all District youth have access to quality OST programming.
The following eight organizations have been awarded funding during School Year 2021-2022 to provide High Impact Tutoring Programs across the District:
